An herbal wonder

I am a creature of habit. The only foods that I ate, were the foods I was familiar with and I was not familiar with garlic. Sure I ate it if it was already in my food but I never chose to cook with it. Now that I have transitioned over to the vegetarian side, I have expanded my palette. I am quite fond of garlic especially in my basil and garlic spaghetti with garlic bread. Yum. But now there is even more to be excited about garlic. "It's been considered by many to be a herbal "wonder drug", with a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague!" Some of the health benefits of garlic are:
  • Garlic has 1% of the potency of penicillin and can ward off a number of bacteria such as Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, Cryptococcal meningitis, Candida albican and Staphylococcus.
  • Garlic can lower blood pressure a little
  • Garlic may help to remove heavy metals such as lead and mercury from the body.
  • Garlic helps to prevent blood clots from forming
Garlic has also been used in some religious and spiritual practices. "In some Buddhist traditions, garlic - along with the other five "pungent spices" - is understood to stimulate sexual and aggressive drives to the detriment of meditation practice.  In Europe, many cultures have used garlic for protection. Herbs aren't just for eating anymore. Do you know what  your favorite herb does?
