Energy drinks vs ENERGY Drinks

Growing up as an athlete, Gatorade was THEE sports drink. You weren't considered a REAL athlete unless you had a few bottles in your workout bag. Now, there are so many energy drinks to choose from, it can get confusing as to what is what. So let me give you my clever perspective on energy drinks. The commercials boasted about how it gives you energy and fills up with electrolytes.

Most of the energy drinks are loaded with sugar and caffeine. With such a jolt from all of that sugar and caffeine, you are sure to get a buzz. The loaded caffeine and sugar, quickly spikes up your blood levels in addition to the adrenals only to bring you back down just as quick.

By coming down so quickly, the body becomes sluggish and craves for more. Before you know it, you are drinking another can of sugar and caffeine to bring you back up. This cycle can put wear and tear on the adrenals and blood sugar levels to the point of causing damage. Very few brands of energy drinks contain any of the necessary vitamins and minerals that you need to sustain the momentum you have without drinking more.

There are all natural drinks out that offer the energy you need to get your through the day and add the necessary vitamin and minerals you need. Green drinks for example, depending on what’s in them, can provide a full serving of fruits and vegetables, fiber and in some cases even protein. Juicing can bring energy to your morning with juice extracted from fresh fruit and vegetables. Not only do you get a few hours of energy from juicing, you also get the much needed vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Another way to get an all natural energy drink in your day is with smoothies. Smoothies can supply the body with fresh fruits, vegetables, fiber and protein when made right. While all natural juices and smoothies contain sugar and the body doesn't recognize it from table sugar or natural sugar, juices and smoothies supply the body with so much more once the sugar has burned off.
There's another family of beverages that can give you energy.  All natural drinks like teas, elixirs and tinctures can also provide the energy you are looking for without the sugar and caffeine. Not only are these drinks loaded with energy producing ingredients, they provide vitamins and minerals to help heal the body and keep it functioning properly. Herbs, flowers, herbal extracts and spices go into the development of teas, elixirs and tinctures. These ingredients have the spiritual properties of the plants and flowers for healing on all levels, which makes them excellent beverages.

New Chef in Town!!

Before I purchased my first house, I started buying the things I would need like bathroom accessories, kitchen stuff and pots and pans. I had no idea what Spirit was doing back then however as I reflect on it now, I can see where Spirit was going. Back then I was making big bucks or what I considered big bucks so I could afford to get the good stuff. I had no idea that I would later become a vegetarian or so health conscious when I decided to buy my pots and pans. The pots and pans that I purchased were Teflon free.

"The nonstick coating used in DuPont’s Teflon® pans has been found to release one or more of 15 different toxic gases when heated to certain temperatures. There are alternatives to Teflon cookware. Safer options include stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron. Anodized aluminum cookware is regarded by some to be better than Teflon, but others feel that aluminum is concerning as it is a potentially toxic metal. One of the main chemicals used in the manufacturing process of Teflon® and other nonstick pans is perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) also known as C-8. This chemical has led to cancer and birth defects in lab animals, and may have led to birth defects in DuPont plant workers."

Aside from food tasting better, its better for you to cook on non Teflon cookware. Choose to live a healthier life.

Kyanite - Stone of Awareness

I work up one morning feeling like I needed to buy some crystals and herbs.  I had no clue as to which ones but felt strongly about going to my spot that I got to for herbs and crystals. So I am standing in the store like ok now what? Spirit you got me out of my bed on a Sunday, so lets get it started. I started walking around like a zombie. Like I was being guided when I found myself in front of their small selection of crystals. I scanned over their selection and thought, ok, well I have all of these but yet I did not move. So I scanned again. I had been hearing Kyanite in my head for a few days but it didn’t dawn on me that’s what I was there for. I looked down and there was basket full of Kyanite. So I got me one, and a few herbs and I was on my way. I knew that I was hearing this crystal but had no clue what it did. There are literally hundreds of crystals out there. I don’t know all of them.

So when I looked up Kyanite, here is what it had to say. “Kyanite can aid you when dialoging with the physical body in meditation. Kyanite’s life-force energy can open the way for spiritual healing of the body and also make it easier to make healthy life style changes. Kyanite works well with the crown and third eye chakras and its focus is spiritual expansion.” Ok, now I get it. I had also been talking about getting back into my yoga, cutting out the chocolate completely and a few other things health wise. Spirit was nudging me on to make those changes. I don't always understand when Spirit tells me to do things, I just do them. It may come to me later, as it did in this instance. Change was necessary.

Love Thy Heart

Many people take the heart for granted. When it comes to “matters of the heart”, the heart is affected physically. The heart is in the center of the chest, which anchors the life-force from the Higher Self.  The heart is governed by the Heart Chakra. The color of the heart chakra is green and generally all green gemstones will work to help balance it. Some red stones work and pink stones will also help balance the heart chakra. My favorite heart chakra stone is Rose Quartz. Its very gentle and loving.

Since the heart chakra is in the center of the chest, it holds together the rest of the chakras. When the heart is unbalanced, the other chakras are unbalanced. When working with clients who complain of heart related issues, I often ask about their relationships. The heart chakra deals with love, empathy and relationships; relationships with self, relationships with others. When caring for the heart, one should keep in mind all aspects of heart health. Whitethorn, thyme and Melissa are excellent herbs for heart health.

Rose in Bloom

I love roses. Not just getting them, because I also buy them for myself to lift the mood, but because the fragrance. I’ve used roses for a number of love spells and products that I make. Roses have a feminine energy and are associated with many of the Deities such as Isis, Adonis, Cupid and Aurora.  Rose petals or rose hips have been used in healing spells and mixtures for centuries.  It is said that when sprinkled around the house, rose petals calm personal stress and personal upheavals.

Did you know that you can eat flowers? Certain flowers have been shown to contain important nutrients. Used in herbal medicine, rose petals with its sweet and warmth acts on the liver and spleen. In healing, it is used to dry colds, clear mucus discharges and harmonizes blood."Bacteria die within five minutes when contacted with fresh rose petals which makes rose a perfect medicine for fighting skin diseases. Fresh rose petals will help cure festering wounds and burns; they may also alleviate allergic itching. Ancient doctors used rose water to treat upset nerves, fumed patients suffering from lungs diseases with rose incense and gave extracts of rose petals to patients suffering from heart and kidney diseases."

More Carrots than Bugs Bunny!!

The other day, the WorthCoach and I were discussing the contents of our refrigerator. She stated that she had received a boat load of carrots and didn’t know what she was going to do with them. I had received a couple of bags myself that were almost on their way out when given they were given to me. I didn’t want to throw them away but had to do something and quickly. We came up with, well juice them.

Juicing is the best!! Fresh juices from juicing contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fluids necessary for body function. Carrots are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Extremely high in pro-vitamin A and contains vitamins B, C, D, E and K. The minerals found in carrots are calcium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and trace minerals.  Skin and hair benefit from the protein and minerals found in carrots. While I am not particularly found of plain carrot juice, when mixed with other juices, it can be quite tasty. For example this healthy bone tonic supplies calcium for maintenance of healthy bones which includes 6 carrots, 4 kale leaves, 4 sprigs of parsley and half an apple. Drink up!!

Garnet: The Blood Stone

Every year I began with a fast. Last year I added a specific crystal healing to my fast using Garnet gemstones.  “Garnet comes from the word Granatum, which refers to the seed of a pomegranate. Garnet is a root chakra stone and provides a sense of rootedness for facilitating tasks.” Since it is an Earth element stone, it also provides grounding energy. They are conductors of past-life memories and are memory sharpeners. Garnets promote compassion of the world and self and help a person to let go. I use them on my root chakra to help stay grounded. Garnets also assist the liver and kidneys in ridding the body of toxins.

Losing Weight with Tumeric

Since it’s still early in the year, I thought I would keep in the flow of weight loss.  I am a big fan of herbs and spices in case you haven’t noticed. Whether it’s in teas, elixirs and tinctures or just sprinkled on my food, there are tremendous amounts of health benefits to gain by adding herbs to your daily diet. Turmeric is a spicy, bitter but warm herb. “It regulates the menses, aids digestion, dissolves gallstones, and decongests the liver. It is also good for improving the blood moving properties of myrrh.” Turmeric has also been used in Hawaiian magic for purification.

Rosemary For Hair

To keep in the flow of natural hair care, I thought I would blog about the wonderful benefits of Rosemary. I probably blogged about Rosemary before, I am almost sure of it as I don't fancy the smell of it and blogged about that. Anyhoo, Rosemary has grown on me. Especially since it blends well with other ingredients that I use in my all natural hair products. When I researched ingredients for my new hair products, I wanted to make sure that the ingredients were going to have many purposes, which is why I love using herbs, extracts and essential oils. Rosemary has become my new bestfriend. It is one of the key ingredients in my hair products.  "When added to shampoo it not only increases the circulation to the scalp and thereby improving hair growth, but also acts as a general conditioner and tonic for the hair and scalp." A very excellent oil and herb to use for dermatitis and eczema.

Natural African American Hair

What is Natural Hair?

Natural hair is hair that is not chemically treated.

Four years ago, I decided to leave the "Creamy Crack" (chemical relaxer) alone and try my hair natural. After all, everything else about me was natural, why not my hair. I had had a chemical relaxer since I was about 12 so I had no idea what my hair was like without the relaxer. A chemical relaxer straightens the natural curl pattern of your hair.

For four years, I wore it short and curly. It was great. Very low maintenance or so I thought. I spent more money on my short natural cut then I did when it was long and straight.. but that is another story. My goal was to grow locs and since I have changed my mind. I have seen so many wonderful hair styles that aren't loc'd that I want to try. So I did some research. In my quest to find hair styles, I came across many "how to's" on caring for hair that I lost sight of the hair styles. I found the information to interesting. I was surprised to see so many women, of all races, looking for natural hair care products. There was a central theme however, and that was, everyone wanted long, healthy hair.

While there was much information on the types of natural products you can make to help your hair look its best, there wasn't a lot of information on other factors that contribute to hair looking and being healthy. Everyone had videos on their hair growing journeys. It was impressive.

One of the contributing factors to growing long hair is nutrition.  "Hair grows best when the body is healthy. A diet rich in minerals (which are found in green leafy vegetables) and proteins (such as eggs, beans, low-fat cheese, and fish) promotes healthy hair growth." There are other factors that contribute to hair growth and loss. "Alcohol is a diuretic, so it causes accelerated dehydration. A lack of body fluid causes dry and brittle hair. Excessive alcohol consumption can deplete levels of iron in the body, leading to hair loss." Drinking lots of water hydrates the body and the skin. Lack of exercise can also affect hair growth. "Walking increases your blood circulation, delivering nutrients to your scalp and hair. Doing yoga positions that are specifically designed to increase blood flow to your upper organs and scalp, can nourish your hair follicles." Health issues and certain medications also affect hair growth. The type of products you put on your hair and scalp play an important role as well.

There is so much on this topic that I can't possibly put it all in this one blog. I will continue to blog about natural hair as I continue my own natural hair journey. I hope you will join me.

Horseradish as an Herb

I am not particularly fond of horseradish alone but I do like it in a few cocktail sauces. There are however some  tasty healthy recipes out there for horseradish. I on the other hand use horseradish for medicinal purposes.
Horse radish is used for the lungs, colon and kidneys. It's a stimulant, diuretic, expectorant and a laxative. It has been traditionally used for gout, rheumatic diseases, bladder infections, colitis, phlegm, damp lung problems, sinus congestion and asthma. Since horseradish is only effective in its fresh state, various preparations are typically made to preserve its medicinal properties.

Dragon Stone - South African Crystal

I was in the store the other day purchasing crystals for my Beginning Crystal's Workshop, when I came across this stone called South African Dragon Stone. This stone is not that attractive however it was calling me. When I looked up the meaning, here is what it said:

"Dragon Stone is a newly discovered green and red Jasper from South Africa. Fire energy; Protective stone, used for wealth, long life, brings intellect to new heights, protects the fields of the physical, emotional and mental bodies."  It has been said that the best way of breaking an old habit is to introduce a new one. Well no secret there why this stone was calling me. Some other useful information about this stone: "Emotionally, Dragon Stones helps one develop self-confidence, a stronger will, an open expression of feeling and affection, a willingness to help others for the greater good, and the persistence required to make real and effective change.

Physically, it seems to aid endurance, and to inspire one to work hard to be well. This includes diet and exercise regimes for getting in shape. It also feels to me that it can aid those who are working to repattern one's cellular habits for regeneration and rejuvenation, all the way down to the DNA. The twisting, snakelike DNA molecule is, after all, something of a Dragon itself!

Spiritually, Dragon Stone can inspire one to place one's self-serving tendencies into service of the well-being of the world. Yet it does not make one into a weak rule-follower. Rather, it encourages fierceness and loyalty to what seems in one's heart to be the Good, and it teaches one to protect and defend that Good with a power and strength one may never have known one even had! A dragon is not a domesticated animal. It is a wild, sentient journeyer among many realms––an excellent ally and a worthy opponent. To carry Dragon Stone is to invite such qualities into oneself."

Gemstone and crystal healing has been around for ages. Their energies are some of the best healers.

Sugar Addiction

Most people are addicted to sugar and don't know it. For me, I think it is the hardest thing to give up. Sugar is in almost everything. "The average American consumes an astounding 2-3 pounds of sugar each week, which is not surprising considering that highly refined sugars in the forms of sucrose (table sugar), dextrose (corn sugar), and high-fructose corn syrup are being processed into so many foods such as bread, breakfast cereal, mayonnaise, peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, and a plethora of microwave meals."  One of the reasons people get sick is that the foods they are eating are not immune boosting foods. "One of sugar's major drawbacks is that it raises the insulin level, which inhibits the release of growth hormones, which in turn depresses the immune system."A lot of people complain about loss of calcium in the bones. A possible culprit could be sugar. "Sugar interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium." Aside from diabetes, sugar can cause other diseases and illnesses such as osteoporosis, food allergies, headaches and depression to name a few.

Holiday Eating

I always looked forward to holiday eating. Food everywhere. So much so, you could not even see the table. The big ole turkey alone took up half the table. Then there were all of the side dishes and tasty desserts. Yum!! Over the years my holiday eating has changed as did my eating habits. Since I no longer eat meat, my table got smaller. Now that I am a conscious eater, in addition to the lack of turkey, there a few menu items missing from the shopping list. I've added more vegetables and less simple carbohydrates to our table during the holidays. Eating during the holidays should be fun, not stressful about what to eat that's healthy. A few ideas to healthy eating are:
  • Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed
  • Be careful with beverages. Alcohol can lessen inhibitions and induce overeating; non-alcoholic beverages can be full of calories and sugar.
  •  Preparing favorite dishes lower in fat and calories will help promote healthy holiday eating.
  • Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat. Skim the fat off. This will save a whopping 56 gm of fat per cup.
  • Dressing — Use a little less bread and add more onions, garlic, celery, and vegetables. Add fruits such as cranberries or apples. Moisten or flavor with low fat low sodium chicken or vegetable broth and applesauce.
  • Mashed Potato — Use skim milk, chicken broth, garlic or garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese instead of whole milk and butter.
There are more however this should get you started. Happy holidays!!

Milk Does the Body Good??

"Milk does the body good."  Remember that slogan? As a kid I drank milk by the gallons. It got worse after I became an athlete in high school and college. Milk was always promoted as THEE source of calcium, for strong teeth and bones, in addition of other vitamins. So naturally when I conceived my daughter, I drank more.

In high school and college, I suffered some terrible menstrual cycles. Never attributed to milk to be the cause of them. While I was pregnant, I experienced the same excruciating pain. I wasn't sure where the pain was coming from this time as I had not received my cycle yet. I continued to drink milk and eat other dairy products.

So now comes the birth of my daughter and the nurses try and feed her cow based formulas. My poor baby blew up like a balloon and turned red. After much trial and error and many formulas later, they came to the conclusion that my daughter was allergic to cow's milk. They put her on a goat's milk based formula.

That seemed to work for her but what about me? Not thinking that milk and dairy was a problem for me, I continued to drink it. The cramping and bloating seemed to be getting worse but it wasn't from my cycle. I stopped drinking milk but continued with the ice cream. Eventually I stopped dairy all together as I could not with stand anymore of the pain. I ventured over to soy milk however I don't think I agreed with that either. So what was a gal to do? I had heard of the side effects of dairy. Some were:

  • *ALL* cow's milk (regular and 'organic') has 59 active hormones, scores of allergens, fat and cholesterol.
  • Most cow's milk has measurable quantities of herbicides, pesticides, dioxins (up to 200 times the safe levels), up to 52 powerful antibiotics (perhaps 53, with LS-50), blood, pus, feces, bacteria and viruses. (Cow's milk can have traces of anything the cow ate... including such things as radioactive fallout from nuke testing ... (the 50's strontium-90 problem).
  • Pathogens & Bacteria
I had to look into other forms of calcium. I had heard about rice milk, almond milk and coconut milk. Coconut milk has many benefits. "This natural drink is usually recommended for maintaining electrolyte balance and can also be used in case of dehydration. Some recent studies have suggested that coconut milk has hyperlipidemic balancing qualities, antimicrobial properties in the gastrointestinal tract or by topical application, and it has been used as a home remedy for healing mouth ulcers." To my surprise I actually like the almond milk. "Almond milk is a milky drink made from ground almonds. Unlike animal milk, almond milk contains no cholesterol or lactose. Regular, unsweetened almond milk can be used as a substitute for animal milk in many recipes, and as it does not contain any animal products, is suitable for vegetarians and vegans."

I am a proud promoter of cleanses and detoxing the body. When you remove everything from your diet and then slowly reintroduce the foods, you will see what your body does not like.

Hematite Gemstone

Hematite is one of my favorite gemstones to use for healing. It's focus is on clearing and building. It is a very grounding stone and looks much like a solid piece of mercury. Hematite helps remove emotional pain and can balance mood swings to assist you in broadening your perspectives. Dissolves negativity and prevents you from absorbing the negativity of others. It works on the root chakra and heals issues of the blood. Hematite stimulates iron absorption in the small intestine, which in turn improves oxygen supply to the body. It has the fire element and is associated with Saturn and is a stone of Aries and Aquarius, but is assigned to Scorpio, whom it not only protects but also warns of danger by changing temperature.

Unexpected Spice

Coriander, commonly used in Indian curry, is a spice most would not have suspected as being a healing herb. "The leaves of coriander are a stimulant and tonic. They strengthen the stomach and promote its action, relieve flatulence, increase secretion and discharge of urine and reduce fever. They act as an aphrodisiac, help in the removal of catarrhal matter and phlegm from the bronchial tubes thereby counteracting any spasmodic disorders." The leaves are called Cilantro and have also been used in some spicy dishes.

Coriander has been used to treat urinary tract infections and strengthen the urinary tract. The cilantro leaves are also antimicrobial and anti-bacterial. "Used in aromatherapy use, coriander has the ability to help in the healing of digestive problems (such as flatulence, indigestion and constipation), to eliminate toxins, stimulate circulation, ease migraine and treat rheumatism and arthritis."

Your kitchen can become your best choice in first aid.

Acid Build up

I often speak with people who suffer from acid reflux or indigestion or some form of acidosis. "Acid reflux is the term used when the acid in your stomach backs up or ‘refluxes’ into the esophagus where it doesn’t belong. Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease or GERD for short is acid reflux that occurs regularly. Reflux by itself isn't unusual. GERD on the other hand, develops when acid reflux happens two or more times a week and produces troublesome symptoms. If left untreated, GERD may
lead to some serious health problems. Only your doctor can tell you if you have GERD." Many people turn to antacids to relieve some of the pain and acid build up. Studies have shown antacids can make your health worse. Antacids can contain some harmful ingredients that wreak havoc on the body. "These salts interfere with the absorption of phosphates. This can lead to constipation, loss of appetite, weakness, and bone damage. Aluminum salts can aggravate patients with Alzheimer's disease, kidney disease, those who are dehydrated, and those with certain bone disorders." Below are a few of the ingredients listed in antacids:
  • Calcium Carbonate – May cause constipation or if over used may actually increase acid reflux instead of reducing it.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide and Magnesium Oxide – Can cause diarrhea. Don’t take it if you have kidney problems.
  • Bismuth Salts – May cause Encephalopathy, a disease of the brain commonly called dementia.
Don't want to use these harmful chemicals? There are several ways to treat acid reflux, heartburn and other digestion issues, naturally.
  • Changing your diet to a  more alkaline diet
  • Eating several hours earlier before going to bed
  • Eating relaxed, not driving or running out of the door
  • Aloe vera has been used to treat stomach upset, diarrhea and inflammation associated with bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis.
  • Licorice is believed to be effective in treating stomach and intestinal ulcers, reducing stomach acid levels, coating the stomach wall with a protective gel and relieving constipation.
  •  Drinking peppermint also helps soothe an upset stomach

Walking with Focus

Each morning I get up and do a walking meditation. I learned of it through a book I read on... well... walking meditations. I can't figure out for the life of me, the name of that book but it was great. When I looked it up to tell you about it, I found that there are many books on walking meditations. So apparently this is not a new concept. Only new to me. The purpose of a walking meditation is to be present. Focus on the moment. Notice everything. Hear everything. Smell everything. I had lived in this neighborhood for almost eight years and never noticed that there was a stream over by the side of the road. You can't see the stream but as I began to focus on my walking meditation, I could hear it which drew my attention to look for it. It was as if I had walked that path for the first time. This path seems different now. It's fall and the colors on the trees never have been so beautiful. The birds are cheerfully chirping and my strides are longer. During this focused walk of mine, I can hear everything so clearly. My vision is impeccable. This always seems to happen when I began a new style of meditation... or perhaps just when I began meditating at all. There are many benefits to this walking meditation. The walking alone provides the much needed exercise, fresh air to my lungs and sunshine to my face which provides the vitamin D. What a lovely way to start the day.

Overcharged

A few years ago my daughter got a new ipod for her birthday. Excited, she tossed the old ipod in the dock and left it there. Still in the dock for several months now, the ipod exploded. It had reached its capacity and had no outlet to release the energy that had built up inside and just exploded.

I use this analogy to our children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and an overly charged battery. "ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood. It affects about 3 - 5% of school aged children. ADHD is diagnosed much more often in boys than in girls. Depression, lack of sleep, learning disabilities, tic disorders, and behavior problems may be confused with, or appear with, ADHD." Most children are born with an incredible amount of energy that when they are finally able to release it, it can be over whelming. Children with this amount of energy will release it in many ways, just to let it out. Society talks about humans being spiritual being living a human existence however human beings aren't being treated like spiritual beings. The first sign of behavior that is NOT considered "normal", is then looked at for treatment with medication. There are many factors a child may have that can contribute to an overly charged behavior.  "Every child suspected of having ADHD should be carefully examined by a doctor to rule out possible other conditions or reasons for the behavior. Medication may be necessary in some cases, with the addition of holistic remedies and alternative healing methods, but its not necessary for all. Just as there are many factors that can contribute to an overly charged behavior, there are just as many holistic remedies that can be offered.

A well balanced diet can help dramatically. Removing processed and refined foods, junk food, caffeine and sugary foods can alleviate the aggressiveness in the mind, body and spirit. Herbs have also shown to be beneficial in people with mental health disorders. Ginkgo Biloba has been used for brain function and concentration. Chamomile is a great tea and has been used for anxiety and nervousness. Essential oils are a great way to catch a little one on the go without all of the fuss. Fragrances of pure essential oils can go along way.  Lavender is an excellent oil to calm the mind's chatter. A combination of holistic healing methods would benefit any spiritual being not just the ones with an overly charged spirit.
