A Hairy Situation

I've had a chemical relaxer since I was a kid. In fact, my mom was a hair stylist and I probably had every new chemical relaxer or product that came out back in those days. I am surprised that I had the head of hair that I had. As I got older, I started doing my own hair. Putting in my own chemical relaxers and hair dyes. I just knew then I would be bald for sure!

When you embark on your spiritual journey, your life changes. You never know where life will bring you. In 2006 I stated that I was going to cut off all my hair and let it grow out naturally without any chemicals. WOW!! I don't know where that came from since I had grown particularly fond of my long hair. My hair had grown to lengths I had never seen before and now I was going to cut it all off? I wasn't sure why I was making such a bold move but I knew a change was in the wind.
I had already cut off all of my hair when I started diving deeper into holistic nutrition, diseases and health. I learned that skin was the largest organ of the human body and that everything that you put on to the skin gets absorbed into the blood stream and filters through the body. Then it dawned on me the relatively dangerous effects that the chemicals I was using could have on my skin and scalp. We put a tremendous amount of chemicals on our scalp. "Chemical processing over time is fatal for all types of hair. The consistent 6 week process that is done over and over again is crucial over time and results to unhealthy hair. Throughout the years as many women complained about gradual hair loss, excessive shedding, unexplained breakage, and stunting hair growth."

Aside from the chemical relaxer, there are a number of chemicals people use everyday in the hair and body care products that are harmful.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol: Isopropyl alcohol is found in hair color rinses, body rubs, hand lotions, after-shave lotions, fragrances and many other cosmetics. This petroleum-derived substance is also used in antifreeze and as a solvent in shellac.
  • Fragrances: Fragrance is present in most deodorants, shampoos, sunscreens, skin care, body care and baby care products. Many of the compounds in fragrances are carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. "Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to 4,000 separate ingredients. Most or all of them are synthetic.
  • MIT is a chemical that contributes to cancer, liver disorders and neurological diseases.
AS a holistic health practitioner, I create chemical free products for my NUBODI customers. All products are made using organic ingredients, fresh herbs and a 100% pure essential oils.

Vitamin E.. friend or foe?

There has been a lot of talk lately about vitamin E and that there are dangers to using it. I was looking for a base recipe for my new lip butter called Escentual Lips. Most of the base recipes I found contain the ingredient vitamin e. I didn't have any in stock so I went out to my local store to purchase some, not my usual supplier. Vitamin E has a tremendous amount of healing properties so I wasn't surprised to see it listed in so many of the recipes. "Vitamin E is an antioxidant that plays a key role in DNA repair, immune function, and other physiological processes."

However when I went to the store, to my surprise the label said some other ingredients that were included in my vitamin e. Hmmmm that's strange. I had read that store bought vitamin E contained more than just vitamin E but I had always used other ingredients that contained the vitamin so I wasn't really investigating it until now. Vitamin E can be found in many foods, however taking more than what is required can be dangerous. "Vitamin E is actually a collective term for eight naturally occurring compounds, four tocopherols (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-) and four tocotrienols (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-). Concentrations of alpha-tocopherol are higher in wheat germ oil, almond and sunflower oil; gamma-tocopherol is the major form of vitamin E in corn oil and soybean oil; levels of tocotrienols are high in rice bran, barley, oats and palm oil." It is important to know what your products contain. Read the labels. Be label savvy. You never know when the product you are using may contain ingredients that you are actually allergic to.

NUBODI products are made with ingredients that already contain a high level of vitamin e such as olive oil, almond oil, grape seed oil, flax seed oil, and coconut oil just to name a few. All of the ingredients that go into NUBODI products are organic and free of dyes, chemcials and artifical colorings.

Skin Deep

I launched my Green Goddess parties... and I must say, they are doing quite well. "When it comes to skin, I've got you covered." Like that? That's my new Green Goddess tag line. LOL I thought it was cute and catchy.

Anyhoo, So I am people watching. I love doing that. And even though its getting pretty chilly out, ladies still have their shiny bare legs out. What that tells me is people are still using baby oil or petroleum based products. "Baby oil is 100% mineral oil. This coats the skin like clingfilm and disrupts the skin's immune barrier as well as inhibiting its ability to breathe and absorb moisture or nutrition. The inability to release toxins results in blocked pores, spots, acne & other skin disorders. Slows down skin function & cell development & therefore leads to premature ageing of skin." Vaseline is a petroleum based product included in many of the beauty products on the market today. However, "it destroys vitamins, may be carcinogenic and they clog the pores."

Every morning like many women, I would get up and "beat my face" is what the gals are calling putting on makeup these day. For almost a year, I barely wore makeup. Even when I went out, I just put on something for my lips. I changed makeup recently. Trying to go as natural as I was going to allow myself to go and decided to buy mineral makeup from a particularly large makeup company. I even found issues with THEIR mineral make up. So I just started to wear only mascara and something on my lips. My favorite mascara contains lead in it!! Is anything safe anymore?? I always wondered why my eyes would itch. I would just blame it on the pollen.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. What you eat and drink directly affects the skin, what it looks like, texture and color. On occasion even body odor. What you put on your skin eventually enters the blood stream which can cause or contribute to illnesses such as asthma, eczema or other more life threatening diseases.

Today products are changing as more and more people are looking for healthier products. Everything now say ORGANIC but doesn't necessarily mean organic. Manufactures are banking (literally) on the fact that consumers do not read labels. Since the cosmetic industry is not regulated by the FDA, the only thing the product has to do is adhere to a few guidelines which are to list the ingredients of that product. For a product to say 100% organic, the label may contain only organic ingredients. Again, does not mean that is what the product contains. For products to claim organic on the label, "95% of the ingredients must be organically grown, and the remaining ones must come from non-organic ingredients that have been approved on the National List. These products can also display the USDA organic logo and/or the certifier's logo. " Lastly for a product to list "Made with organic ingredients, "Must be made with at least 70% organic ingredients, three of which must be listed on the package. The remaining 30% of non-organic ingredients must be approved on the National List. These products may display the certifier's logo but not the USDA organic logo."  Read carefully your product's label.

NUBODI Escentuals are handmade organic products. All of the base products come from reputable manufactures with not only the 100% organic stamped on their labels but also the FDA logo as well. You will not find any talc or aluminum in NUBODI deodorant. Talc "is a known carcinogen and a major cause of ovarian cancer when used in the genital area. It can also lodge in the lungs causing respiratory disorders." Aluminum "actually blocks your pores and has been linked to Alzheimer's Disease and breast cancer."
NUBODI shampoos and conditioners are free of Isopropyl myristate, Iso-propylmyristate (Alcohol), which "Derived from Petroleum or Polyethylene Glycol, which "strips skin's "Natural Moisture Factor", leaving the immune system vulnerable and is "commonly found in antifreeze and brake fluid; it is highly toxic, causing brain, liver & kidney abnormalities."

Are your products safe?
